TMCNet: 'Take Advantage of Local Cooperative' - Bea Mountain Management Encourages King Jor Residents

(AllAfrica Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) The Management of Bea Mountain Mining Corporation, a subsidiary of Aureus Mining, has encouraged local residents to take advantage of the already established cooperative so as to form part of the economic empowerment process as part of its corporate social responsibility in the wake of planned resettlement program Bea Mountain Mining Corporation is working with the local residents of King Jor Township, located in Darblo Clan, Gola-Konneh District in Grand Cape Mount County to establish broad base commercial opportunities centered around providing goods and services to the Company and the community at large.

The establishment of the cooperative is in line with a planned eviction of community residents from the rich gold deposit site to a modern community that the company is currently constructing few meters away from the original alluvial mining site.

"The cooperative will address a number of issues ranging from economic empowerment, family needs and even increase economic activities in the clan or the entire district and it will be of increased benefits to the members", Rexford C. Sartuh Community Relations and Government Reporting Manager said.

He spoke during the granting of certificate to the acting leadership in anticipation of legitimizing the group.

Mr. Sartuh said the establishment of the inclusive empowerment cooperative society seeks to address not only the company's social responsibility of the company, but creates the platform to begin the process to engage the company.

He said while it is true that the beginning of everything is quite a challenge, the cooperatives are established to meet the socio-economic needs of its members, and added "members of cooperative in any community stand a better chance to benefit most than non-members; as result of that residents of King Jor should take advantage of the process in order to improve their livelihood and be economically empowered." The Inclusive Empowerment Enterprise now supplies the vast majority of the timber being used for construction at what would soon be Liberia's first Gold Mining company. Shortly, the company intends to work with the community to expand its offering to include a uniform factory that will produce overalls for its workers, and an agriculture unit that will grow the fruits, vegetables and poultry for the project's consumption.

"Cooperatives are established all over the country especially in Lofa, Bong and Nimba Counties where the people are yielding maximum benefits", Mr. Sartuh said.

Presenting the certificate, Ofori Freeman, Assistant Regional Registrar of the Cooperative Development Agency added that the pre-cooperative status permit is given to the group to jumpstart the process of empowerment both in agriculture and wood processing.

According to the CDA Assistant Regional Registrar for Bomi, Grand Cape Mount and Gbarpolu counties, the essence of cooperative is that it brings about unity among grassrootters or rural inhabitants and it also brings about development. "Most of all it brings money when the capital on investment (shares) are paid by the members".

"In so doing, members receive equitable distribution after a financial year when the dividend is declared", Mr. Freeman added.

He pointed out that there are several counts that need to be worked on before the issuance of official certificate. Some of the counts he named include the development and finalization of by-law and constitution, conduct of leadership election, formation of the Board of Directors, development of a business plan and the opening of a bank account.

In response, the Chairman of the Inclusive Empowerment Cooperative Society, King Basheru Sambola lauded both the company and the Cooperative Development Agency for the timely delivery of the first document to officially begin their work.

He used the occasion to call on the group to complete the registration process and begin to purchase their shares in order to move the cooperative to the next level.

Aureus Mining Inc. is a gold exploration and development company listed on TSX and AIM (AUE). It is focused in highly prospective and under-explored areas of Liberia and Cameroon.
