THE Busia government wants to know how a contractor was paid Sh13 million for services not rendered. County Roads executive Gregory Odeke said the contractor was paid by a sugar miller.
"How can one be paid money for doing nothing? Such contractors should be prosecuted for dishonesty," he said. Odeke was speaking during a forum at Hotel Itoya in Busia on Thursday. He said the supervision of local roads by Kenya Rural Roads Authority and Kenya Urban Roads Authority is wanting and urged them to seek experts.
Odeke appealed to the national government to give preference to local contractors and only outsource where need arises. The forum, which was opened by Busia Governor Sospeter Ojaamong', drew participants from Mumias Sugar and Mastermind Tobacco Companies, Kura, Kerra, Kenha and constituency roads committees.
Ojaamong' told contractors to "stop living in the past" and asked road officials to embrace modern technology to improve workmanship. He warned contractors doing shoddy jobs that they will not be paid. Ojaamong' said the national government has released Sh35 million for road repairs.
