There is too much corruption in South Africa and people are more concerned about making quick deals than to create a caring society, Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan said last night.
Speaking at the Minara Chamber of Commerce gala dinner in Durban, Gordhan said South Africans had forgotten what it meant to have empathy.
“Far too many people in the country are concerned about making quick deals and are not worried about how it affects other people,” he said.
The gala was held to honour the lives and achievements of South African Indian leaders who are exemplars of humanity.
Chairman of the Sekunjalo Group, which owns Independent Newspapers, Dr Iqbal Survé, was honoured for his contribution in the business sector.
Retired Judge Zakeria Yacoob received an award for his role in the professional field while cricketer Hashim Alma was honoured as a young achiever.
