DAKAR, Senegal (AP) - An international human rights group is calling on authorities in Central African Republic to investigate after rebels decimated a village.
Human Rights Watch said Monday it had confirmed that rebel leader Abdallah Hamat and his forces had attacked the town of Camp Bangui earlier this month.
Witnesses said most of the homes in the town had been set ablaze, forcing hundreds of families to flee.
Human Rights Watch said the death toll from the attack will likely never be known.
A commanding officer told the group the homes had been burned because fighters were hiding among the population.
The rebels overthrew the president in March and put their leader Michel Djotodia in power. He has since formally dissolved the rebel coalition and now has little control over the fighters.
