Nairobi — The Communications Commissions of Kenya (CCK) has cautioned Kenyans over counterfeit set top boxes for digital television broadcasting.
CCK Director General Francis Wangusi said there have been complaints of Kenyans purchasing faulty set top boxes from unscrupulous traders.
Wangusi maintained that CCK has only licensed 45 vendors which are all required to have specific offices for customers to lodge complaints incase of hitches.
"We have authorised these vendors to give a warranty of duration of time so that if the set top boxes are faulty they can be given a replacement," Wangusi said.
He said due to the high demand currently, some illegal traders want to exploit Kenyans by selling fake gadgets.
His sentiments come even as the digital TV migration issue continues to raise a tussle between the Media Owners Association and the government.
Three media houses moved to court seeking orders to stop the government from effecting the TV digital migration from December 13 arguing that they stand to suffer huge financial loss if the government goes ahead with its plan to switch off all analogue TV frequencies in Nairobi and its environs.
Wangusi was speaking during the launch of the Commission's strategic plan for 2013 to 2018 in Nairobi.
Among others, the plan targets to provide an enabling environment for ICT development, enhancing and modernising institutional capacity, facilitating sector infrastructure and service development and promoting sector market development.
"The Commission developed its first strategic plan in 2005. The second strategic plan was a five-year plan covering the period 2008-13. Today, we unveil our third Strategic Plan having been developed through a consultative process with stakeholders in the ICT Sector," he said.
