BEIRUT: Syria’s ambassador to the United Nations eulogized a leading Orthodox bishop as “an opponent of all forms of foreign intervention, especially American,” in the Syrian crisis, state-run news agency SANA said Sunday.
Bashar Jaafari made the comments while attending the funeral of Michel Saliba in New York City, where he said the bishop “always put his feet in the right place during the most difficult of times for his country, because he was a man of convictions and principles.”
Saliba, who was the primate of the Antiochian Diocese of North America, 83, died on March 20.
Jaafari has been restricted by the U.S. State Department to a 25-mile radius around New York City.
