MAIDUGURI, Nigeria (AP) - A witness and official say suspected Islamic extremists attacked a northeast Nigerian village overnight, killing 39 people and razing all the thatched-roof huts.
Taxi driver Mansu Buba said he returned to Mainok village Sunday to find victims being buried. Mainok has been attacked many times in the past year.
A State Security Service agent said no huts were left standing. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to speak to reporters.
The attack occurred the same Saturday night that twin car bombs blasted a marketplace 60 kilometers (37 miles) away in the city of Maiduguri. A Red Cross official says 51 bodies have been recovered there and many more victims are believed buried in rubble.
More than 300 people were killed in extremist attacks last month.
