The Catholic Church has poured cold water on the suggestion by Kiharu MP Irungu Kang'ata to have the late Archbishop Boniface Lele canonised. Kang'ata said he will lobby Catholic MPs and officials in the government and send a delegation to Rome to request that Lele be canonised.
Lele died on April 9 and was buried in a tomb in the grotto of the Holy Ghost Cathedral in Mombasa on April 22. The vicar general of the church, Father Wilybard Lagho, said though the idea is noble, it is not up to politicians to decide. He said being canonised takes a long time and procedures must be done to the satisfaction of Rome.
"That is not the right channel to follow," said Father Lagho. "The right steps have to be followed and with the right people who are the ones to make that request to Rome." Lagho said certain conditions must be fulfilled.
