KINSHASA, April 26 (Bernama) -- More than 30 people were killed in a stampede Friday at a tribute concert held for renowned Congolese singer Jean Baptiste Emeneya in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo).
Local government said the incident took place after two generators supplying electricity to the town of Kikwit failed and caused a blackout, Xinhua news agency reported.
Witnesses said the sudden blackout caused the audience to panic and clashed with police who attempted to get into the stadium.
A local hospital said it had received 23 bodies and the victims' family members were arriving at the hospital.
Kikwit is the hometown of Emeneya or more popularly known as King Kester Emeneya who died in Paris in February.
The concert which was scheduled to run for three days has been cancelled following the incident.
