By Elizabeth WereA row is simmering between the Communication Workers Union and Telkom Kenya over what the union terms as "unfair labour practice" and discrimination.
Cowu claims that the telco is creating an impression that the union endorsed a bonus payment of Sh2,000 to its members in a consultative meeting held Tuesday, contrary to its position.
In the letter to the chief human resource officer, Cowu secretary-general Benson Okwaro claims Telkom released staff pay slips immediately after the meeting, making it look like the two parties had struck a deal.
"While we accepted the invitation [to the meeting] in good faith, we realise that your intention was to use the union to make our members believe that the union was part of the agreement to pay them a token of Sh2,000," Okwaro states.
"The fact is that we did not meet to negotiate the bonuses. It is in record that the union refused the offer."
Cowu claims that non-member staff were awarded bonuses "ranging between 50 per cent and 75 per cent" of their salaries.
National officials of the union were to meet Friday followed by another with members this Sunday to decide the course of action. Cowu said it is considering marshalling its members to boycott duty over the unfair treatment.
