The Chief Executive Officer of the Petroleum Commission, Mr Theophilus N. Ahwireng, has asked local firms including financial institutions to take keen interest in research to enable them to understand and deliver quality services to their customers.
He said investing in research and development would also enable them to gain an insight into their own businesses to impact productivity.
Mr Ahwireng gave the advice at a networking session for financial institutions in Accra last Monday.
It was organised by Pyxera Global, a Non-Governmental Organisation, and funded by the USAID.
Research and business
Mr Ahwireng stated that with the advent of technology, it was very easy for businesses to conduct research at any given location.
“If one has an in-depth knowledge about his job, he is more bound to succeed to boost the productivity of his organisation.
‘’I ,therefore, encourage you to spend time to understand the operations of the industry to find out whether it is an environment you would like to participate in,’’ he added.
He emphasised the need for financial institutions and local companies to explore one another’s state of businesses, and lend support to one another for their mutual growth.
‘’We see a development in Ghana where businesses are struggling to survive, and financial institutions are doing very well. This obviously does not promote growth,’’ he said.
Later in an interview with the Daily Graphic, the Chief of Party for the Ghana Supply Chain Development, a USAID-funded Programme-Pyxera Global, Mr Ken McGhee, stated that the major problem that small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and business service providers faced was lack of access to funding from the banks.
He was, therefore, optimistic the workshop would afford businesses the opportunity to discuss how best to build a healthy business relationship with banks to access funds.
