NBC director general Albertus Aochamub made the announcement during the 1st Election Forum meeting, comprising representatives of 17 political parties recently at the broadcaster's headquarters in Windhoek.
According to Aochamub, the aim of the forum was to create a platform for engagement between the NBC and the parties contesting the elections. The platform was also used to deliberate on the election coverage guidelines, especially those on the coverage and broadcast of political parties' rallies and campaign messages.
Aochamub reiterated that the election forum was created to ensure a smooth election process sure that issues raised can be addressed as they occur. “I can absolutely confirm that we have done everything we can do. We are as ready as can be,” Aochamub said.
Several DTA politicians claimed that the broadcaster was being “picky” when it comes to political rally coverage.
Opuwo constituency DTA councillor Uarukua Kakuva claimed that NBC, as a state broadcaster, was biased in reporting on the rallies of opposition parties and only chose to attend a selected few. “This should not be the case as we all pay for TV licences,” he said. Kakuva was speaking at the DTA star rally which took place at Opuwo over the weekend. He however expressed gratitude that the NBC had turned up to cover the party's star rally over the weekend. “We hope that you (NBC) will report on our rallies fairly and accurately” he said.
