Five San Diego climbers are preparing to scale Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania in February to raise awareness and funding to fight global human trafficking.
The group is participating in Operation Mobilization's Corporate Freedom Climb sponsored by The Wasie Foundation, which wants to raise more than $2 million to break the cycles of poverty and oppression that make women and children vulnerable to human trafficking and other forms of modern-day slavery.
Freedom Climb was conceived and launched by San Diego resident Cathey Anderson. What started as an idea has become a global movement, with climbs all over the world.
One of the climbers is Mike Brown, a senior portfolio manager with Dowling & Yahnke who attends Horizon Christian Fellowship in Rancho Santa Fe. He became aware of the issue on a trip to Africa a few years ago, where he saw Operation Mobilization's programs for job training, education and economic development.
Operation Mobilization has identified 40 projects around the world that will receive the funds.
In addition to Brown, the San Diego climbers are Tony Criss, Lorraine Hauser, Mark Hauser and Brian Hicks. They will be joined by Ken Kemp and Lauren Matt, both from Orange County. The Kilimanjaro climb will attract about 30 climbers from around the world.
The group is seeking corporate sponsors and virtual climbers. For more information, see visit thefreedomclimb.net. To donate online, go to http://ift.tt/1rDOVFJ.
