The community is invited to join local members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints this week at a conference featuring Elder Joseph W. Sitati, a member of the church’s leadership. Sitati, who was born and educated in Kenya, was sustained as a member of the First Quorum of the Seventy in 2009.
Sitati will address the congregation in a series of meetings during the semiannual conference of the Woodland California Stake. A meeting for adults begins at 7 p.m. Saturday, followed by a general session for all ages at 10 a.m. Sunday at the LDS meetinghouse, 850 Pioneer Ave. in Woodland. Spanish and Mandarin translation will be available at both meetings.
Sitati is part of the LDS church general authorities, who are called from among the more than 15 million members in nearly 30,000 congregations around the world. At the time of his call, he was serving as president of the church’s Nigeria Calabar Mission.
He currently serves on the Perpetual Education Fund Committee, which oversees a program established in 2001 that has helped more than 40,000 men and women throughout the world receive education, training and employment opportunities to better their lives and the lives of their families.
He also serves as an assistant executive director in the Temple Department, helping oversee the church’s 144 worldwide temples, places of prayer and worship for church members.
Sitati earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Nairobi in 1975 and a diploma in accounting and finance from the Association of Certified Accountants. He has also done MBA course work from the same university and worked as an executive for Reach the Children, a nongovernmental organization.
Prior to that, he worked in several positions with the Total Group, the fourth largest oil and gas company in the world. Among those positions was that of strategy manager at Total Kenya and consultant for the overseas division.
Since joining the LDS church in 1986, Sitati has served in numerous church positions, including branch president, district president, stake president, Area Seventy and mission president. He also served as the church’s international director of public affairs for Africa.
