The Ghana Integrity Initiative is calling for the prosecution of State Attorneys who failed to defend the state in the infamous Woyomegate scandal.
According to its Executive Secretary, Vitus Azeem, the prosecutors should be charged for causing financial loss to the state.
The Attorney General failed to provide incontrovertible evidence to back its claim that Mr. Woyome defrauded the state by claiming 51 million cedis in judgement debt.
After about three years of trial, an Accra Fast Track High Court acquitted and discharged Mr. Woyome and cleared him of all two counts of causing financial loss to the state and defrauding the state by false pretense.
But Vitus Azeem said he is not surprised by the ruling because “prosecution showed no interest in pursuing the case”.
He noted that since most of those implicated in the case were in the Attorney General’s department, the state was reluctant in following a case involving their own people.
“I think the state prosecutors should be charged for causing financial loss to the state, not Woyome,” he told Accra-based Citi FM.
“When we hire people and pay them to defend the state, it’s sad when they don’t take the matter serious,” he bemoaned.
Vitus Azeem was convinced some individuals and group of people in government stand to gain from the ruling.
