LANGFORD, B.C. — Ghislaine Landry scored three tries and added four conversions as Canada thumped South Africa 47-0 to improve to 2-0 at the World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series on Saturday.
Landry’s 23-point single-game haul was the second most in the three-year history of the women’s series. New Zealand’s Portia Woodman holds the record at 25.
The Canadians, who faced the U.S. in the final game of the day in a matchup of unbeaten teams, defeated Russia 26-15 in their first match.
Series-leading New Zealand ran its winning streak to 32 games, beating Fiji 38-14 and Spain 45-10.
Canada is currently tied with Australia for second in the overall standings. France is fourth and the U.S. fifth. The top four teams at the end of the season qualify automatically for the 2016 Olympics.
Natasha Watcham-Roy had two tries off the bench for the Canadians. Britt Benn and Hannah Darling, also a substitute, added singles for Canada against the 11th-ranked South Africans. Kelly Russell contributed two conversions.
South Africa’s Marithay Pienaar was stretchered off the field after being bowled over in a Canadian attack. A tournament spokesman said later she was moving.
Benn, Kayla Moleschi, Karen Paquin and Bianca Farella scored tries against No. 7 Russia. Landry added three conversions.
No. 8 Fiji rallied to tie No. 6 England 19-19 in one of the day’s more exciting finales.
Toronto’s Katrina Santilly, who has dual citizenship via her Brazilian-born mother, made her senior debut for Brazil.
The 12-team tournament at Westhills Stadium, the series’ first visit to Canada, wraps up Sunday.
