NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) -- Some Kenyan relatives of students who were killed in an attack by Islamic militants say they will offer prayers of forgiveness for the killers, responding to an appeal for compassion by a Catholic archbishop.
Cardinal John Njue, Nairobi's archbishop, prayed Wednesday with some of the victims' families following the April 2 assault on Garissa University College by the al-Shabab extremist group. Four gunmen killed 148 people and they too died when Kenyan forces entered the campus.
Njue said the victims' families should take courage despite the loss. He also called for a "process of compassion" for the perpetrators.
Evelyn Wakholi's 18-year-old daughter, Milly Yonbo, died in the attack. Wakholi accepted the cardinal's message, noting a biblical message: `"Do not judge."'
