Pig Farmers under the Mzuzu Agricultural Division (ADD) are panicking as an outbreak of swine fever has been reported across four districts in the Northern Region.
Latest statistics indicate that about 220 pigs have been killed against by the fever in those four districts.
According to Mzuzu ADD Livestock expert, Jacob Mwansinga, high fever, Coughing, Vomiting and high breathing rate are some of the signs of the fever.
Mwansinga said out of the 220 pigs that have died, 80 are from Ekwendeni in Mzimba, making it the worst affected area.
"At the moment, I would say Ekwendeni is the worst affected area as about 80 pigs have died," Said Mwansinga.
Against what some farmers are doing due to the outbreak, Mwansinga has advised them to refrain from slaughtering and transferring of the affected pigs as one way of overcoming the further spread of the fever.
