Police in Rwanda have managed to recover another stolen vehicle from Uganda, as part of its bid to cut down cross-border crimes, an effort that seen several vehicles in the region and beyond recovered recently.
The Toyota Hilux pickup truck model was handed over on April 20, to the Liaison Officer at the Uganda High Commission in Rwanda, Patrick Lawot and following investigations in Uganda, the suspect was apprehended.
Rwanda’s efforts have seen a couple of stolen vehicles recovered within this year, and Rwanda’s Commissioner for Interpol, ACP Tony Kuramba says there is a strong commitment Rwanda National Police has in fighting crimes in and outside its borders.
On March 6th, Rwanda Interpol Police recovered another stolen Kenyan truck and in February 2015 handed over two more vehicles which were stolen from Kenya and smuggled into Rwanda.
Just like the previous operations by Interpol Rwanda, the recent vehicle was recovered late last year in Rusizi District as it was being smuggled to Rwanda from DR Congo.
The theft of four- wheel drive vehicles is known for being a lucrative business among vehicle thieves who normally cross to Rwanda and Congo where such vehicles are on a high demand and commonly used.
Rwanda Interpol police has seen a successful security initiative which has enabled the force to recover vehicles that were stolen in the United Kingdom (UK). The Range Rover Sport V8 was also said to be heading to the DRC.
Mid-January, Rwanda Interpol police in collaboration with its EAC counterparts managed to crackdown on two cases of trans-border thefts; one conducted of money theft done Uganda and vehicle robbery in Kenya.
Apparently, in a reciprocal like efforts, last year in May, the Uganda Police also managed to intercept, in Kampala, a Rwandan stolen truck- Mercedes Benz model-belonging to a Rwandan local businessman Gerald Bizimungu, after it had been stolen in April the previous year.
Police in Uganda says that most of the cars stolen in Uganda end up being sold in Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), South Sudan and Rwanda.
