President Jacob Zuma has authorised for another year, the deployment of 1 351 SANDF soldiers in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), 850 in Darfur, Sudan and 220 in the southern Indian Ocean.
The Presidency said 1 345 SANDF troops had been “employed” in the DRC since April 1 last year as part of the Force Intervention Brigade which falls under the UN peacekeeping mission Monusco. Their authorisation was due to expire next week.
Zuma had now informed Parliament that those troops and another six would continue to be employed in the DRC until March 31 next year.
Similarly Zuma had informed Parliament that he had extended the employment of the 850 troops participating in Darfur peacekeeping.
And he informed Parliament that he had also extended the employment of 220 SANDF personnel who are part of teams serving on the SA Navy ships patrolling Mozambican, Tanzanian and international waters off the southern African coast, to monitor and deter piracy. - Independent Foreign Service
