President Barack Obama has signed an executive order allowing the U.S. to sanction individuals and entities involved in stoking violence in South Sudan.
Obama signed the order Thursday. In a statement, the White House says the order sends the message that those who threaten the peace, security or stability of South Sudan "will not have a friend in the United States."
Massive violence broke out in South Sudan in December after a dispute among the presidential guards. That dispute soon pitted backers of South Sudan's president against the former vice president, who now commands the loyalty of a large number of rebel troops who control significant parts of the country.
The White House called for an end to the violence, saying there is "no room for excuses or delay."
