Sudan's government is considering reversing the death sentence passed on Meriam Ibrahim, who faces hanging for refusing to renounce her Christian faith.

A representative from neighbouring South Sudan said it had approached the government in Khartoum and offered to mediate - because Ms Ibrahim's husband, Daniel Wani, was born in the South.

"The authorities have expressed readiness to examine the case and see how it could be handled with mutual respect," Charles Manyang, the under-secretary for South Sudan's foreign affairs ministry, told The Sudan Tribune. "The response we got was positive."

President Omar al-Bashir, who has imposed Islamic law on Sudan, has come under increasing pressure since the sentencing of Ms Ibrahim, 27, for apostasy on May 15.
