UNITED NATIONS, June 3 (BERNAMA-NNN- SUNA) -- The United Nations Security Council has renewed the mandate of the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA), according to Resolution 2156 (2014), Sudan's Permanent Mission to the UN has reported.
The resolution stipulated the necessity of the commitment of the two governments in Sudan and South Sudan to the implementation of the agreement on June 20, 2011 on Abyei.
The resolution is also regarding commitment on the agreement on the common border area's security and the joint security mechanism, the agreement of July 30 regarding support to the border monitoring as well as the signed agreements between the two sides on Sept 27, 2012 and the implementation matrix of agreements that was signed the two sides on March 12, 2013.
The resolution, according to Sudan's UN permanent mission, affirmed that the final status of the disputed Abyei region along the Sudan-South Sudan border should be settled through negotiations, and not through unilateral actions.
Meanwhile, the acting Charge d'Affaires at Sudan's Permanent Mission to the UN, Ambassador Hassan Hamid, affirmed the importance of commitment to the full implementation of the agreements signed by the two countries on the final status of Abyei.
He stressed that all the signed agreements are inseparable and are part of one package, indicating that the best means to achieve final settlement for the Abyei issue begins by establishment of the interim administrative and security mechanisms (the Legislative Assembly, the administration and the police organ.
This will provide appropriate atmosphere for stability and peaceful co-existence between the population groups (Messairiya and Dinka Ngok tribes), prior to achieving a final settlement for Abyei.
