THE AFRICAN Union (AU) was seeking funding from some of the continent’s richest people, including Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote, to pay the costs for volunteer doctors and nurses fighting Ebola in west Africa, it said yesterday. The continental bloc was seeking to raise $35 million (R386m) in the first round and eventually as much as $100m for the Business-to-Rescue Fund, said George Sibotshiwe, the executive director of the African Democratic Institution, which is co-ordinating a November 8 meeting in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, to encourage businessmen to donate. A campaign to ask for contributions from “citizens” would follow, he said. Dangote and Patrice Motsepe, the chairman of African Rainbow Minerals are expected to attend the meeting. – Bloomberg
