By James WainainaA Matatu driver was shot dead by gangsters during a daylight robbery in Thika town at the weekend as insecurity in Thika town soars.
The three-man gang fled in a car after robbing passengers on the Thika-Makongeni road near Munene Industries.
A witness, John Kamau, said two of the thugs who were in a car blocked the matatu while their accomplice who was posing as a passenger shot the driver killing him on the spot.
A passenger Paul Ndegwa who was going to bank his employer's money said he boarded the matatu at Makongeni and sat at the back. He said one of the gunmen seemed to be looking for a specific person.
The robbers took away an unknown amount of money and drove off shooting in the air to scare away passersby.
Police arrived at the scene after the robbers had fled. Residents expressed concern over an upsurge in crime in the area.
The local community policing chairman Joseph Jomo called on the police to intensify patrols as the festive season approaches to stem rising crime.
Estates prone to insecurity include Makongeni, Majengo, Kiganjo, Kiandutu, Witeithie, Athena and Ngoingwa.
Police have been accused of laxity in fighting crime in these areas.
