Ghana international Abdul Rahman Baba has set his sights on helping German Bundesliga side Augsburg seal a place in the UEFA Europa League.
The 20-year-old defender, who has made 24 league appearances for the club this season, is relishing the battle to secure a spot in continental football as the club currently occupies sixth position in the Bundesliga.
“It will be a massive dream come true for the club and our fans,” Baba told AfricanFootball.com
“To the players we just need to keep working towards it, but I know it’s a strong possibility.
“We’re in a good position to achieve that but we should not get carried away.”
For an outfit the size of Augsburg, Baba, believes competing for a place in Europe could be the perfect learning environment for a club with ambitions of playing at the highest level.
“We didn’t go into the season thinking of Europe but the desire and ambition of the club is gradually driving us there,” he said.
“Some people probable expect us to focus on staying in the Bundesliga as a major aim.
“But when you get into the position we are in now, with eight games in front of us, then wanting more is not out of place.”
Baba’s performances in Germany caught the eye of former Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah, and he made his debut for the Black Stars in September 2014 against Togo.
He played in all six matches as Ghana finished runners-up at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea, but remains confident the Black Stars will bounce back from the heartbreak of losing to Ivory Coast on penalties.
“We were unlucky to lose to Ivory Coast in the final of the AFCON but we live to fight another day,” added Baba.
“We have a young squad and a very experienced manager in Mr Avram Grant, so the future is bright.
“I hope to get another chance with the Black Stars again and continue to give my best to my country.”
