Kampala- Arrangements have been finalised for government to establish a functional Intellectual Property (IP) enforcement unit to guard against the infringement on copyright and trademarks.
Mr Bemanya Twebaze, the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) Director General, said yesterday the move seeks to put in place structures to eliminate cases of counterfeiting copyrights and trademarks to boost economic gains for original products and creations.
“Like many other countries, Uganda is still facing a challenge of piracy and counterfeits. But we already have a law which provides for civil, criminal and administrative sanctions.
However, the challenge has always been enforcement of IP which is attributed to lack of human resource, financial and technical skills,” Mr Tumwebaze said.
Speaking at the opening of the 14th African Regional Intellectual Property Organisation summit in Kampala, Mr Twebaze also revealed that URSB has embarked on the process of formulating a policy to implement the available laws.
