VETERAN anti-apartheid activist Dr Mamphela Ramphele yesterday said one of the reasons she decided to enter mainstream politics at the age of 65 was to prevent the ANC from destroying the freedoms Nelson Mandela and other struggle heroes fought so hard to win.
"The ANC is no longer a party of those leaders ... it is a feeding trough," the newly formed Agang SA's leader explained.
Speaking to a mixed bag of Grahamstown residents yesterday, she did not pull her punches when she urged South Africans to voice their dissatisfaction with ANC rule at the ballot box next year.
"People need to register and vote for their future and not the [ANC] past. The ANC is so scared, their only card is Madiba."
She said it was not too late for South Africans to create the "dream country" Mandela sacrificed a large part of his life fighting to achieve.
"We need to restore the promise and ideals of our struggle heroes."
Agang SA wanted to promote respect, equality, freedom and other values enshrined in the constitution, combined with the "wisdom" of ubuntu.
The party would be tough on issues like corruption and called for clean, competent governance.
