One of the Lost Boys of Sudan who lived in Jacksonville was recently killed in a conflict in Pariang County in South Sudan.
Andrew Abith Abui, 32, was a U.S. citizen and attended classes at Florida State College at Jacksonville with financial help from the Alliance for the Lost Boys who had grants from Delores Barr Weaver and the Scheidel Family Foundation, according to the alliance.
The Lost Boys of Sudan are a group of about 3,800 boys who were given refugee status in the United States in 2000-01 after getting separated from their families and fleeing their homes after their villages were under attack.
About 150 of them lived in Jacksonville.
Abui returned to Sudan four months ago for his wedding, the alliance said. Nothing has been released about the status of his wife.
There will be a prayer service and peace rally at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Hogan Baptist Church at 8045 Hogan Road.
