The National Conscience Party founded by radical lawyer and human rights activist, late Chief Gani Fawehinmi, and a political think-tank, Centre for Democracy and Development, on Saturday condemned the midnight killing of some students of Federal Government College, Muni Yadi in Yobe State by members of the Boko Haram Islamic sect.
They specifically called on government to harmonize the national security infrastructure in a way that would provide for the strengthening and encouraging of synergy among security agencies, particularly the Nigerian Army.
Their suggestion was against the background of allegations that soldiers deployed in the area were withdrawn before the massacre.
The National Chairman of NCP, Dr. Yunusa Tanko, told journalists in Abuja that the party has decided to boycott the centenary celebration to demonstrate its solidarity with the families of students that were killed.
He said, “We woke up to hear about the murder of 59 students in Yobe State. This particular killing took place within four good hours. Allegations were that Nigerian Army troops were being moved out of the place where that particular crime was committed.
“We are therefore calling on President Goodluck Jonathan to be at the forefront of this particular crusade just as the governor of Borno state had stated that the Nigerian Army’s morale is low.
“What is done in any country is that the President who has sworn to protect the lives and properties of Nigerians should go to the street to show solidarity, protect the people and boost the morale of Nigerian Army for this challenge to be tackled.”
