Western Sahara: Sahrawi Govt Stresses Focus on W. Sahara in U.S.-Morocco Talks

Polisario fighters in Western Sahara (file photo): The Polisario Front has joined the Sahrawi government in calling attention to what it calls the "special' status given to the issue of decolonization of Western Sahara" in last week's talks between the U.S. and Morocco.

Sahrawi Refugee Camps — Sahrawi government and the Polisario Front have underlined the "special" attention given to the question of Western Sahara decolonization during the discussion held between US President Barack Obama and Moroccan King Mohammed VI in Washington.

"Following the joint statement between the United States and the Kingdom of Morocco at the end of the visit of the Moroccan king to Washington, the Sahrawi Government and the Polisario Front have noted the special attention given to the issue of the decolonization of Western Sahara in the discussions between the two sides," said Saturday the Sahrawi Ministry of Information in a communiqué.

The Sahrawi government and the Polisario Front also noted the "interest" given by the United States to the issue of human rights in Western Sahara, which reflects the deep concern about the violations committed against the Sahrawi people since over 38 years of Moroccan occupation and supports the international demand for the need to mandate the UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) with human rights monitoring and protection," the statement said.

They also underlined "the support of the United States to a just, lasting and mutually acceptable solution to the Western Sahara conflict in the context of the United Nations as well as the efforts undertaken by the UN Secretary General Personal Envoy for Western Sahara Christopher Ross to that end."
